Relationship between the Concentration of CO-Hb and Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Intoxication

Park Choong-Suh
Abstract
To study the influence of CO-Hb concentration on the clinical course and prognosis of CO intoxication patients, we studied 43 acute cases admitted to the neurology department of Yeungnam Uni ersity Hospital since Jan. ¢¥85 to July ¢¥86, by analysing CO-Hb concentration, EEG and serum GPT.
The EEG showed the more CO-Hb concentration brought the worsening of the following EEG after 1 week.
Especially when the concentration was more than 51%, there were almost no cases who showed
improvement. When it was less than 40%, most cases were improved.
When hyperbaric 02 therapy was not administered, 3 cases did not show improvement even t Tough the concentration was less than 30%.
Therefore, in view of the above fact and slight clinical symptoms appearing with 20% of COHb concentration, it is considered to be mandatory to perform hyperbaric 02 therapy when the concetration is more than 20%.
The young patients below age 30 did not show delayed encephalopathy, but showed increased serum GPT, hence when serum CO-Hb is more than 31%, it is required to have measurment of serum GPT and the patient¢¥s rest.
Delayed encephaiopathy is the most important problem above age 30 and when the CO-Hb concentration is more than 31%, it is necessary to do EEG study to see the degree of the brain damage and treat the patient with cerebral metabolic activators.
